He builds on a primary index: at two points, the text provides an «interpretation» (tafṣīl) of a Scripture already known, which recalls the midrashic processes that draw from the text practical (halakha) or doctrinal (haggada) conclusions. Moreover, the enumeration of the four Messengers of God culminates in a long text about the sending of Moses first to Pharaoh and then to the Israelites; subscribing to the continuity of the doctrine of « substitution » developed in some Christian circles (whereby the Church is the true people of the alliance, replacing an unfaithful Israel, and rejected early in its history), the Surah asserts that by choosing the cult the golden calf, the Israelites have deprived themselves of God’s mercy, which from this moment is promised to the future Muslim community.
