الكتاب عبارة عن مجموعة من أخبار وأشعار وقصص المحبين، كتبها اﻹمام ابن حزم أثناء اقامته فى شاطبة باﻷندلس، تناول فيه بالبحث والدراسة عاطفة الحب ومظاهره وأسبابه، معتمدا فيه على شيء من التحليل النفسي من خلال ما عرفه وخبره من الوقائع والحوادث والمواقف، مبتعدًا عن شطط الخيال وأوهام القُصَّاص وما زخرت به أخبار العرب من قصص العشاق ومآثر المحبين وآلامهم، اﻷمر الذى جعل هذا الكتاب دليلًا مباشرًا على العادات واﻷعراف الغرامية فى بلاد اﻷندلس فى عصره.

Summary

The book is a collection of love reports, poems and anecdotes wrote by Ibn Ḥazm during his residence in the Andalusian city of Šāṭiba. He discussed in a psycho-analytical tone the nature, manifestations and causes of love based on his knowledge and experience. Ibn Ḥazm avoided following the imaginary exaggerations and the delusive reports of the story-tellers. He opted-out reporting the widespread anecdotes in the Arabic historical literature that dramatically express the pain and suffering of lovers. Such approach made his book a valuable evidence on the social norms and customs related to love in the Andalusian lands during his time.
